Early Life

Vimy Vern Thiessen was born on February 25, 1897, in the small town of Vimy, Alberta. He was the eldest of seven children born to German immigrants. Thiessen's father was a farmer, and the family lived a simple life. Thiessen attended school in Vimy and helped out on the family farm. He was a good student and a talented athlete. He loved to play hockey and baseball.

World War I

Thiessen was 18 years old when World War I broke out. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 and was sent to France. Thiessen fought in several major battles, including Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. He was wounded in action twice, but he returned to the front both times.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge

The Battle of Vimy Ridge was one of the most important battles of World War I. The Canadian Corps was tasked with capturing the ridge, which was held by the German army. The battle began on April 9, 1917, and the Canadians fought their way up the ridge against fierce German resistance. Thiessen was one of the first Canadians to reach the top of the ridge. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the battle.

Later Life

After the war, Thiessen returned to Canada and became a farmer. He married and had four children. Thiessen was a modest man who never sought the limelight. He rarely spoke about his experiences in the war. In 1967, Thiessen was awarded the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honour in Canada. He died in 1983 at the age of 86.
