Biographical

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1804. His family was descended from some of the earliest settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Hawthorne himself was deeply interested in the history and culture of New England. He graduated from Bown College in 1825 and began his writing career as a short story writer. In 1850, he published The Scarlet Letter, which was a critical and commercial success. Hawthorne went on to write several other novels, including The House of the Seven Gables (1851) and The Blithedale Romance (1852),before his death in 1864.
