Pugwash is an international organization that brings together scientists and policymakers to work towards peace and nuclear disarmament. It was founded in 1957 by a group of scientists, including Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell, who were concerned about the threat of nuclear war.
Vern Thiessen was a Canadian scientist and peace activist who played a key role in Pugwash. He was born in Saskatchewan in 1925 and studied physics at the University of Saskatchewan. After graduating, he worked as a research scientist at the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). In 1957, he was invited to attend the first Pugwash conference. He was so impressed by the conference that he became a lifelong supporter of Pugwash.
Thiessen served on the Pugwash Executive Committee from 1963 to 1975 and was President of Pugwash from 1975 to 1979. He was also a member of the Pugwash Council until his death in 2011.
Thiessen's work with Pugwash focused on a number of key issues, including nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. He was a strong advocate for a comprehensive test ban treaty and for the elimination of all nuclear weapons. He also worked to promote dialogue between scientists and policymakers from different countries.
Thiessen's work with Pugwash was recognized with a number of awards, including the Order of Canada, the Albert Einstein Peace Prize, and the Right Livelihood Award. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Thiessen died in 2011 at the age of 85. He is remembered as a tireless advocate for peace and nuclear disarmament.
