The story begins with the Van Der Luydens, a prominent Dutch family who had made their fortune in the shipping industry. In the summer of 1892, the family was living in a rented mansion on Bellevue Avenue, Newport's most exclusive street. The family consisted of William Van Der Luyden, his wife Mary, and their two children, William Jr. and Alice.
The trouble began in July, when the family began to experience a series of strange and unsettling events. They heard unexplained noises in the night, saw objects moving on their own, and felt a sense of dread that hung heavy in the air. The children were particularly affected, and began to complain of nightmares and sleepwalking.
As the events continued, the Van Der Luydens became increasingly terrified. They called in a priest to bless the house, and even hired a detective to investigate the strange occurrences. But nothing seemed to help.
On the night of August 10, 1892, the terror reached its peak. The family was awakened by a loud crash in the middle of the night. They rushed to the source of the noise and found that a large mirror had fallen from the wall and shattered into a thousand pieces. In the broken glass, they saw a reflection of a strange and sinister figure.
The Van Der Luydens were so terrified that they fled the house and never returned. They spent the rest of their lives haunted by the events of that summer, and the "Nightmare in Newport" became a legend that has been passed down through generations.
There are many theories about what happened to the Van Der Luydens that summer. Some believe that they were the victims of a poltergeist, while others believe that they were simply suffering from mass hysteria. Whatever the truth may be, the "Nightmare in Newport" remains one of the most chilling and enigmatic true crime stories in American history.
Aftermath
The Van Der Luydens never returned to the mansion on Bellevue Avenue, and the house remained empty for many years. In 1914, it was purchased by a group of investors who turned it into a hotel. The hotel was a popular destination for tourists and celebrities, and many people claimed to have seen the ghost of Mary Van Der Luyden wandering the halls.
In 1964, the hotel was sold to a developer who converted it into apartments. The apartments are still occupied today, and some tenants claim to have experienced strange and unexplained events.
The "Nightmare in Newport" remains one of the most popular and enduring ghost stories in American history. It has been the subject of numerous books, articles, and television shows. In 2011, it was made into a major motion picture starring Keira Knightley and Daniel Craig.
Whether or not you believe in ghosts, the "Nightmare in Newport" is a fascinating and chilling story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
